American Pitcher Plant -Sarracenia sp.

If you don’t want to make the trip up to Sebastopol, Chomp 2 is still going on at the Conservatory of Flowers.  The same guy, Peter D’Amato from CA Carnivores, is the same person who consulted for their carnivorous plant installation.

Pitcher Plant Flowering

These sweet vases like bug eating leaves produce some cool flowers.

Oh, they have a double headed Venus Fly Trap.  I was told that it was more of an anomaly, e.g. something that they can’t predict.  I remember the first time we feed ours some crickets…lots o fun.  We bought a couple bugs from the pet store in a zip lock baggie.  Before giving them to the fly trap, we popped him in the freezer for a couple minutes to stun them…then put them in the traps.  The plant was happy.

We had a couple Sarracenia species outside that we completely neglected, and brought them indoors so that we would pay more attention to them.  Good news is that they are getting back into shape.  Before chucking some of the dead leaves in the compost bin, we sliced them open down the middle.  Low and behold…there were a bunch of dead bugs inside the vase like leaves.  A bit disgusting, but a curious site.  Hey, we came across this great blog all about these crazy pitcher plants…check out Sarracenia Dude at The Pitcher Plant Project.
